A WPT No. 1 joins Miami Padel Club. The Hurricane Marta Marrero is here!

World-renowned padel tennis pro joins the new Pro Padel League franchise ahead of the inaugural season that kicks off on May 13 in Tampa, FL 

MIAMI, FL (Wednesday, April 12, 2023) – Miami Padel Club announces the signing of Padel and Tennis pro Marta Marrero. The 39-year-old has played Padel for over a decade, reaching the WPT No. 1 ranking in 2016 and 2019 and winning 25 professional titles. In tennis, she reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and achieved 43 WTA singles and doubles. The native from Spain is considered one of the best backhand players in the WPT.

“Marta has been one of the most legendary female players in the world and we are very excited to welcome her to the Miami Padel Club after a successful career in the sport,” said Miami Padel Club General Manager, Davis Jamieson. “As we continue to pursue top talent worldwide to build a competitive and inclusive team, Marta’s acquisition demonstrates the trust of global players in our vision to be the best in the Pro Padel League (PPL) and their commitment to represent our community.”

“I’m thrilled to choose Miami as the next step to bring my career to new heights as the city is an excellent hub to grow the sport of padel,” said Marrero. “The Miami Padel Club has an ambitious sporting project to excel on the PPL stage and gives me an opportunity to serve as a role model for more women and girls to play and become fans of the game.”

Miami’s Padel Club is one of seven franchises in the PPL. It includes top players Ruben Rivera (Spain), Jose Grizpe (USA), Simon Charaf Jones (Mexico), Mateo Coles (USA), Paloma Cortina (USA), Brittney Dubins (USA), and Maria Fernanda Espinosa (Mexico).

The PPL’s inaugural season will kick off in Tampa on May 13 with seven teams and conclude with the PPL CUP on June 10-11 to determine the league’s champion. Each team will consist of two male and two female players and will follow the international scoring format.

Padel has over 25 million players worldwide and is growing in popularity in the U.S. with the number of Padel courts set to double this year. Over 8 million players are projected to be playing in the U.S. by 2030.
